Being a child in Dorchester, Massachusetts, wasn't anything special. I did what my mother and father told me to do and bumped along, a fat kid, at play around the walls of our yellow and green three-decker house. I can remember in detail a few toys, arguments with my sister, and the pink hollyhocks that filled the front yard. But it's sliding on ice for me to put a face to my grandmother who lived upstairs or to put my names to the Jews, Italians and Irishmen who were our neighbors along Julian Street. In the family album from the 1950's I am wearing a first communion suit, swimming trunks, torn jerseys, a Hopalong Cassidy hat, a little gent's overcoat and a soft-brimmed hat.
