"Pip Erken followed ‘The Brotherhood’ the Russian gas pipeline that crosses Ukraine. It took him from East to West. He documented a country that invested in steel production and energy supplies but is now left with ageing technology and limited funds to maintain or update it. Pip met and lived with young Ukrainians who are deeply affected by history. They are chained by the past but have a mind towards the future. The book is designed for Pip Erken’s graduation at the KABK, The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Printed in a limited edition of 300. Remnants of the Recent Past was one of the six finalists of the Nikon-prize: best photo book for Dutch photography students." (publisher's note)
