Johan van der Keuken's career as a documentary filmmaker, author and photographer spanned four decades, until his death in 2001. Based in Amsterdam, his work covered a wide range of subjects. First published in 1955, ‘Wij zijn 17’ is a book of photographs of his friends and classmates, taken by him at the age of 17. These portraits of post-war Dutch teenagers tackle the intangible theme of youth in a moving and personal way.
