Ihei Kimura, indisputably Japan's No. 1
photographer, was born on Dec. 12, 1901 in Tokyo as a son of a small industrialist.
He started taking pictures at the age of nine.
After graduation from a commercial school, he obtained a job in a sugar company in Formosa in 1920 but quit it within the year.
Kimura operated a photo studio in Tokyo 1924 through 1928. From then on, he joined and separated from various photo outfits, but has lived most of his career as a free lance.
Kimura was the first Japanese to buy a Leica in 1924 and to use it for every purpose. He has been the foremost Leica-man in Japan, although he started using also Nikon since 1951.
First international recognition of his caliber came in 1934 when Life used his portrait of Gen. Senjuro Hayashi as its cover picture and Modern Photography accepted two of his pictures as Japan's representative works.
Kimura has travelled many places of the world. In June 1955, he departed again to Europe-this time mainly to Scandinavian countries. He has also authored many books of photography including the widely acclaimed
"Select Pictures by Ihei Kimura" published by Asahi in 1954.
